ABOUT THE BAR EXAM

Format

Essay - Tuesday:

An essay examination, consisting of four essay questions prepared by the Board of Bar Examiners plus two Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions prepared by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). The MPT questions are each allotted 1.5 hours, and the four essay questions must be completed in a four-hour time period.

MBE - Wednesday:

The Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) prepared by the NCBE. The MBE is an objective six-hour examination containing 200 questions. The examination is divided into two periods of three hours each, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with 100 questions in each period.

Grading

Applicants must pass both sections. A scaled 135 is a passing score for the MBE. 135 (scaled) or 36 (raw) is the passing score for the essays.
